Place

A free, open-source digital whiteboard for remote collaboration

What

Place was developed during a hackathon as a proof of concept to address the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the shift to remote work and learning. As teams and schools transitioned to working from home, they faced several challenges with existing collaboration tools.

Most platforms required users to sign up, pay for subscriptions, or navigate through complex interfaces just to get started. This proved especially difficult for schools and organizations that needed a fast, easy, and free solution. Place solves these problems by offering an open-source, digital whiteboard that can be accessed with a simple URL.

Users can start collaborating instantly without the need for logins or subscriptions, making it ideal for schools, educators, and remote teams. Place’s minimal, intuitive design encourages creativity and collaboration in a way that’s both accessible and efficient.

Problem and solution

The rapid shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in existing digital collaboration tools. Many platforms required time-consuming sign-ups, paid subscriptions, and offered features that, while powerful, were unnecessary for teams and schools just trying to get the basics done. This left many users struggling with tools that were either too complex or not accessible.

Place was created to eliminate these hurdles. It’s completely open-source, allowing anyone to use or even modify it without restrictions. With no login required, users can generate a unique URL for a new whiteboard in seconds, making it an ideal solution for classrooms and teams that need to brainstorm, share ideas, and collaborate quickly.

Place’s focus is on a simple and functional interface that prioritized ease of use, ensuring that anyone, regardless of technical skill, could participate in collaborative sessions. The platform’s flexibility and open-source nature also ensure that it can be adapted and scaled as needs evolve.
