VUI Guide

A comprehensive guide to improve the design and development of voice interfaces

What

The VUI Guide was created to fill a gap in the resources available for designing Voice User Interfaces (VUIs), especially for teams outside major tech companies. While companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have internal best practices, smaller teams and independent designers often lack the structured guidance needed to create effective voice interfaces.

The VUI Guide provides a comprehensive, open-source resource that designers and developers can use to understand the principles of voice interaction, with a focus on user behavior. It’s a living guide, open for community contributions, designed to grow as the industry evolves. The goal is to make VUI design accessible to a broader audience, offering a structured yet flexible approach that can be adapted to different projects and needs.

Problem and solution

The challenge in designing the VUI Guide was addressing the information diversity and lack of standardized resources for voice interface design, especially for those not working within large tech corporations. Most existing guides focus on the needs of big players like Apple or Google, leaving little room for independent teams to find tailored solutions.

The VUI Guide aims to solve this problem by providing a comprehensive framework for designing voice interfaces that can work across various platforms and industries. The guide breaks down essential topics such as voice interaction patterns, user behavior insights, and technical considerations for developers. A key focus was to make the guide easy to read and digest, whether the user is a designer or developer.

In addition, the guide is optimized for readability and structured to provide deep insights without overwhelming the user. By making it open-source, the project allows ongoing contributions from the community, ensuring that the guide remains relevant as voice interaction evolves. This approach helps bridge the gap between the highly specialized resources used by big tech companies and the more general needs of smaller teams, making voice interface design more accessible to everyone.
